When to Start SAT Prep: A Timeline for Grades 9, 10 and 11
Aman A. · November 1, 2026
Most students do best when serious SAT prep starts in the fall or winter of 10th grade, or early in 11th grade, with a first official test in the spring of 11th grade. That leaves time for a second or third attempt before college applications are due in 12th grade.
The timeline at a glance
| Grade | What to focus on |
|---|---|
| 9th grade | Strong grades and a solid algebra foundation. Read widely. No formal SAT prep needed yet. |
| 10th grade | Take the PSAT if your school offers it. Start structured prep in the fall or winter if your goals are ambitious. |
| Summer before 11th | The best time for intensive prep: no school load, and scores count for the fall and spring tests. |
| 11th grade, fall | PSAT/NMSQT (the National Merit qualifying test). Many students take a first SAT in the fall or winter. |
| 11th grade, spring | Take or retake the SAT (March, May or June). |
| 12th grade, fall | A final attempt if needed, early enough for early application deadlines. |

How long does prep take?
It depends on the gap between a student's starting score and their goal. As a rough guide, a student who needs to fill content gaps in algebra or grammar benefits from several months of weekly classes; a student already close to their goal may only need a focused review of question types and timing in the final two months.
That is why we run two kinds of programs: year-long SAT prep with September, November, January and March starts, and an 8-week crash course before each test date for students who mainly need practice and strategy.
Signs it is time to start
- A PSAT score report shows clear weak areas in math or reading and writing
- Your child's target colleges or scholarships call for a score well above their current level
- Your child's spring and summer are already busy, and fall is the only open window
Start with a diagnostic
Before choosing a program, have your child take a full timed practice test. It shows where the points are and how much time to plan. Contact us to book one at our Ashburn center.
