The Final Week Before the Academies of Loudoun Test: A Calm, Practical Plan
Aman A. · November 1, 2026
The 2026 Academies of Loudoun admission test and writing assessment are on Thursday, November 12, during the school day at your child's middle school. With a week or so to go, the goal is not to learn new topics. It is to arrive rested, confident and familiar with the format.
What a final week can and cannot do
The STEM test rewards reasoning built over months, so a few days will not change a student's foundation. What a good final week does change is pace, accuracy and nerves: students who have practiced under time make fewer careless errors and skip fewer questions.
A day-by-day plan
| When | STEM test | Writing assessment |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days out | One full timed practice test (past format: 33 questions in 50 minutes) | One timed response to a STEM or current-issue prompt |
| 6–4 days out | Review every missed question; redo it without looking at the solution | Outline three prompts in 5 minutes each: position, two reasons, one example |
| 3 days out | Short mixed sets: ratios and rates, spatial puzzles, logic | One more timed response, then compare it with the first |
| 2 days out | Light review of your own mistake log only | Reread your best response and the feedback on it |
| Day before | No new practice. Pack, sleep early | Nothing new |
The writing assessment deserves real attention
Many families focus only on the STEM test. Recent prep-company reports citing LCPS materials describe a short timed response, about 30 minutes in 2026, scored on the quality of ideas and organization, with grammar and spelling not counted against students. That means the winning habits are simple:
- Take a clear position in the first two sentences
- Support it with two specific reasons and at least one concrete example from science, technology or daily life
- Spend the first 3–4 minutes planning; a planned response almost always reads better
- Leave 2 minutes at the end to reread and fix anything unclear
STEM test habits that save points
- Leave nothing blank unless the official instructions on test day say guessing is penalized
- Skip and return: a hard question is worth the same as an easy one
- Trust the numbers and the words over how a diagram looks
- For rate and work problems, write the rate per unit of time before doing anything else
- For spatial questions, sketch: drawing a cube net or a fold is faster than imagining it
The night before and the morning of
- A normal dinner and a normal bedtime; no late-night cramming
- Breakfast with protein, and water
- Remind your child that one test day does not define them, and that they have prepared
Dates and formats come from LCPS and from prep-company summaries of LCPS materials. Always check the LCPS admissions page for the latest instructions.
If your child is in 7th grade
Next year's applicants have time to build the skills properly. Our year-long AOS and AET program starts in September of 7th grade, with one hour of STEM and one hour of writing in every class, and new students can join at the start of each phase. The next start is January.
